One week post op.

Hi,

its been one week since Barney had his operation and so far everyday seems like a step (or hop) in the right direction.

The first night was upsetting, seeing Barney trying to walk and not realising his leg isn’t there anymore and a few times he just fell over. He had a few upset nights trying to get comfortable and we could hear him whimpering but he was in a different position every time I came down so he was moving.

today has been his best day by far he got out of the house without any help and did his business and then came back in unaided.

He is still learning and I’m trying to help without annoying him. He is a licker and has made his wound sore in places but with a t-shirt on he leaves it alone.

everyday is a blessing now and we just hope he gets better and enjoys life without pain, I hope to take him on a wood walk again but I know it will take time but he always loves them. We are just enjoying the cuddles and being with him.

Barney is in recovery now

Hey,

so Barney had his surgery yesterday and all is well so far, he is still at the vets for now and I’m hoping he gets to come home Thursday.

the vet said the procedure went to plan and they also removed the enlarged lymph node, we will have samples sent off for a biopsy and find out the results soon.

he was very anxious when he woke up and they had to give him Valium to calm him down but this morning I called and got told he had a pretty calm night and even ate breakfast this morning, which for Barney is a great sign.

I will keep updating as we go, I’ll take any advice for our journey ahead, I know it’s going to be a hard one but I’m just glad he will be coming home. Thanks for all your support everyone.

Operation Tuesday!

Sorry for the late post but we got the news that Barney is going ahead with surgery on Tuesday, the vet said his colleague had raised a few concerns with the x rays but I was only told about one which is an enlarged lymph node, but I’m hoping that it is ok as they said they will still amputate his leg, so fingers crossed guys that all goes well and I get my boy back after surgery a pain free dog.

Today has been a bad day for Barney he has been limping worse than ever and barely puts his paw down and the lump has got so much bigger in the last few days. I hope this surgery works.

CT scans today.

Ok so we saw the vet today and Barney had his CT scans and unfortunately the cancer has done too much damage to his leg that they cannot save it but on the plus side the lungs have come up clear, the vet wants to get them double checked by a colleague and if it’s all good then he will book him in for the amputation next week. It’s still sad but if it gives us longer with Barney and he is happy and healthy then it’s got be done. Here’s hoping 🤞 Friday brings good news about the scans. Positive thoughts all the way.

Barneys journey

Hi Guys,

This is my first post and it’s the start of our dog Barneys journey.

After we saw the vet two days ago we found out Barney has bone cancer in his front right leg, We have been told that Barney may not be a good candidate for amputation because of his breed and size, I’m hoping that there are people out there that have been told this and proved a vet wrong with their dogs.

we are due to see an orthopaedic surgeon this tues for a CT scan and his opinion to see if it’s ok to try surgery with Barney.

Barney is a six year old Rottweiler x Doberman and weighing in at 60kgs he is a big boy, a gentle giant and we love him.

i don’t want to see him suffer but I would love to give him a chance to keep fighting and enjoy life with us for as long as is possible while he is happy and not in pain.

i will keep updating his journey.

love

Tiffany and Barney
